Uncovered: What a weekend!
As it always happens the weekend is chock full of events taking place but I’m too busy to attend all of them.
Tonight, ACAD student Jenner Zywotkiewicz will be on hand at Hi-fi for the art opening of “Lyrics.” Not your typical rap and hip hop fan, Zywotkiewicz listened to a few rap songs and was inspired by some of the lyrics that stood out to her. She put the lyrics on the painted black and white canvases. I first saw them at Factory Party 3 at Artlife back in October 2008. Check out the video I made of event, which features Zywotkiewicz work.
Friday the 13th. What an unlucky day for me. K’naan released his second album two weeks ago and he’s on his way to Calgary to perform Friday night at the Marquee Room. I was a little slow and now the event is sold out. If you’re lucky enough to have tickets you should know that I strongly dislike you.
Saturday night there are a few events worth checking out.
Artlife Gallery is hosting ParkShow, a fashion and art fundraiser for ParkSale – an annual summer event where independent artists can sell their work. Minimum donation of $7 and the show starts at 10:30 p.m., featuring local fashions and a dance performance by Urban Dance Crew: Geekie. (This is where I’ll be as I’m part of the show).
The Swallow-a-bicycle Performance Co-op presents Sexual Outlaws at the Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club. This erotic party features Kris Demeanor, The Firm Handshake, Seven Story Redhead, DJ GoodWord and is hosted by AJ Demers. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Check out Swallow-a-bicycle’s website here for more information.
Intrigued by what’s happening in Northern Ireland right now? How bout a little bit more light hearted take? The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh by Ground Zero Theatre is having it’s grand opening performance Saturday at the Vertigo Theatre. Tickets available at Vertigo’s box office or at GZT’s website here.
So plenty to take in this weekend. If you attend any or all, please let me know how they went.
