A hair-raising experience
While many of us dread any notion of hair loss, 17 individuals on Monday at Mount Royal took the plunge and entered the world of baldness for a good cause.
The Shave Your Lid For A Kid event presented by CMRC Radio and the EnCana Wellness Center in Wyckham House pulled in $3,833, all of which will go the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta.
Co-organizer and first-year MRC broadcasting student Brent Talbot was thrilled with the support the head shave received.
“For me it seems that many adults choose cancer, whether it be through smoking or whatever, but kids are born with cancer,” Talbot, sporting a freshly shaven chrome dome, explained. “It’s really all about giving these kids a fighting chance.
“When you meet them they are so incredible because they don’t sweat the small stuff like the rest of us because they never know what tomorrow holds for them.”
Justin Weatherill, a leukemia survivor, eagerly volunteered to shave his head in hopes of helping to raise awareness.
“I think it’s really important because when I was diagnosed I didn’t realize there was so much support for people with cancer,” Weatherill explained of his cancer bout in 2004. “Your family and freinds are affected a great deal and also need support to in turn help you through the fight.”

Weatherill has helped organize previous head shave events at Mount Royal and hopes they continue on in the future.
Students at the college weren’t the only ones who felt the need to do their part, as eight-year-old Carson Woodman also chose to receive his first-ever buzz-cut.
“I actually may keep it like this,” Carson said, rubbing his smooth head.
The youngster heard about the event from the organizers and figured he could part with some hair if it helped make a difference for others his age.
“It’s for the kids that have cancer, I feel really bad for them,” Carson said. “I kind of thought to myself ‘it’s only hair.’ ”
