Beating boredom: Get your blog on
I trust everyone has had a lovely holiday season. It feels…nice…to be back. More stressful already than anything but that’s the way the cookie crumbles for now I suppose.
Aside from trying to get settled into my new classes, sadly waving goodbye to all of the free time that I had over the break, it is time to get back into the swing of blogging for the always wonderful Reflector website.
So as 2010 neared, a revelation came to me, in between the celebratory swigs of champagne…it’s time to sort my life out.
Part of that resolution involves writing more, and becoming more skillful in my means of expression. Hence I decided it might be time to get an ol’ blog up and running, (obviously outside of this one). And so it hit me…why not invite my fellow bored friends to at least consider the possibility of blogging to take up some of the copious amounts of free time that they have.
We’re living in the communication age these days and with so much technology at our fingertips, anyone can get published. Obviously that has its pros and cons. People are able to write about whatever they want, but therefore are not held accountable or are able to be edited. At the same time however, blogs can support citizen journalism, as well as can act as a means for people to get their ideas, observations, and emotions off of their chest.
It’s simple to get a blog started with some of the most popular host sites being tumblr and blogspot. Just pick a topic and go from there. The key to a successful blog however is to try and keep it updated, and fresh.
So as I try to get better at the whole blogging thing, I hope there might be a few new blogs popping up out there in the next week or so. If anyone has suggestions for ones they frequent or if you start up your own then leave a comment and share the love.
Here are a few I draw inspiration from:
Calgary Fashion this started out as a blog about Calgary’s fashion scene and in the short time it has been up and running, the very fierce Miss Kim Jev has turned her endeavor into a bonefied media source covering fashion in lifestyle in many Canadian cities.
Style Rookie I am absolutely amazed by this girl. Tavi Gevinson is like 13 years old and has the most acute observations and wittiest remarks about fashion and pop culture. She is so beyond her time and writes better than anyone I know, even my self so I am a wee bit jealous of her awesomeness. Gevinson is totally going places!
Devin’s Blog one of my friends spent some time in a few African countries as a freelance photojournalist. He documented his time there on this blog and wrote about all things related to his experiences. I’m still in awe of how amazing his journey must have been and I’m so proud. Definitely check this blog out. It’s crazy how much we take for granted other parts of our world.
Eager Sails so while I lived in England last year, I befriended an awesome band. This is the drummer’s blog, filled with amazing photos and stories from life on tour.
Perez Hilton how can I not include a celebrity gossip blog. our culture is significantly celeb obsessed and Perez Hilton has made a name for himself for his observations about lavish Hollywood lifestyles. A crazy example of how a simple blogger ends up infiltrating the celebrity scene and being considered and expert on all things famous.
Death Would be Easier the brother of Bring Me The Horizon’s lead singer Oli Sykes, Tom, takes some of the best pictures I have ever seen in my life.
The New Beat ok so this one is mine, and it hasn’t been updated in foreverrrr but it’s gonna be back in full swing soon enough, so have a sneak peek. 🙂
