Blog that shit: Celebrities and their hope for Haiti
I’ve worked at The Reflector for a while now and I’ve never jumped on the blog train, which of course wasn’t welcomed by my boss. It was never because of a lack of effort. I would sit and think about what to blog (side note Blog isn’t recognized by Microsoft Word common Word get with the times) about for minutes and I never reached a subject that really stood out for me. I seemed to get distracted by the same thing every time… celebrity gossip (Seriously, 25 words in to this post and I was perusing through Perez Hilton).
Now I want you to know, I am a very serious journalist, seriously, that isn’t a joke. I truly want to make a difference with my journalism career, but like everyone I have a guilty pleasure…The Celebrity world. Who is flashing their va-jay jay at the cameras the night before is extremely fascinating to me. I’m known around the office as the girl that will constantly yell out random facts about the celebrities; I’ve even got another editor here obsessed with Perez Hilton.
So after explaining my situation to you about why I’m interested in celebrities and giving many denial comments about my addiction; I’m now going to start blogging weekly about celebrities and the crazy world that is Los Angeles, because lets be honest it truly is, it’s own little world.
I’m going to show you my serious journalist pen ship along with my slightly creepy infatuation with celebrities: with the blog called Celebrities and their Hope for Haiti.
After the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Port au Prince, Haiti on Jan. 12, it was clear too many around the world that this would become a time where society needs to pull together to help our fellow brothers and sisters of Haiti. With close to three million people in need of emergency help you could tell that the help needed to come immediately.
We all know that celebrities make a ridiculous amount of money and the majority of products that they receive they get for free. So to dig into their pockets and hand out a couple thousand shouldn’t be that difficult.
Everyday, since the earthquake, I’ve read about another celebrity that is donating money, or joining up with a cause to raise money. Which shouldn’t shock me because I truly believe in humanity but it does shock me to see individuals giving so much.
Starting off the amazing donations is no other than the Brangelina pair. Which if you’ve lived under a rock for five years, means Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. This pair, which is known for their ever-growing diverse soccer team of children, donated one million to their Jolie-Pitt Foundation. Side note, cute how they put Jolie’s name first on the foundation, good man that Brad is.
Next up we had Madonna, she clearly showed she isn’t your typical “Material Girl” as she donated $250,000 dollars to the Partners in Health, which is an organization designed to help in times of need.
Then we had one of my favorites because she’s just so darn cute and isn’t in the tabloids, so I respect her: Sandra Bullock. Bullock donated one million dollars to Doctors without Borders.
Next John Travolta lent out his own personal plane to transport down some volunteer ministers and some supplies as well as some medics.
Shakira promised to build a new school down in Haiti releasing this statement about the Barefoot Foundation and the need down in Haiti: “There is a great need for immediate aid in Haiti, but also for longer-term reconstruction. For that reason, we are doing our small part to help Haiti rebuild and give the children affected by this disaster the chance to learn and thrive. I hope we can use some of what we’ve learned working in Colombia to help Haiti’s children recover. When we educate children we empower societies, and right now Haiti needs all of our help.”
The last celebrity I’m going to mention is George Clooney. Clooney organized a telethon that will be broadcasted on MTV tonight, Friday January 22. Clearly with George’s reputation you will know that this telethon will be a huge success, he will have many celebrities answering phones as well as many of the top entertainers performing. If you tune in tonight you will see: Brad Pitt, Zac Efron, Sandra Bullock, Rennee Zellweger, Colin Farrell, Courtney Cox (No Jennifer Aniston?) for you Twihards, Robert Pattinson and so many more. Performing you will see Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, Skakira, Alicia Keys Jay Z, Rhianna, Bono, Bruce Springsteen and again many others. Hosting this event will be of course George Clooney as well as Wyclef Jean who’s originally from Haiti and Anderson Cooper will be live from Haiti. That is quite the list of “A” listers pulling together for an amazing cause.
Canadian celebrities are also doing something similar with a one-hour commercial free special airing immediately before Clooneys. The list of celebrities include: Celine Dion, James Cameron, Michael J. Fox, Jason Reitman, Ryan Reynolds, William Shatner, Rachelle Lefevre, Joshua Jackson, Pamela Anderson, Eugene Levy, Norman Jewison, Will Arnett, Sandra Oh, Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, David Foster, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Nash, Prime Minister Stephen Harper (clearly because he has a lot of time on his hands), and Gov. Gen Michaelle Jean who is also originally from Haiti. Wow, I’m surprised some of those celebrities even remember that they are from a country north of the USA border. Hope they remember how to get here.
So as you can see there are some positives about celebrities, but definitely stay tuned for whose showing their va-jay jay and whose cheating on who cause in the world of Los Angeles it isn’t very difficult to find.
