Cougars golden on greens

It isn’t rare to see cougars prowling the foothills of Southern Alberta. However, the Cougars stalking the fairways at Wintergreen Golf Course had a different prey in mind: ACAC gold. The Cougars’ men’s and women’s golf squads each captured team gold at the 2010 ACAC Championships, held at the popular Bragg Creek course. Sept. 30 and Oct.1. The Cougars captured the men’s team title by an astonishing 32 strokes over second-place MacEwan, while the women finished two ahead of second-place Lethbridge.
On the men’s side, Mount Royal golfers claimed the top seven positions, with Nathan Schurr winning gold with a combined score of 147. Craig Bloom finished with silver at 149 and Wallace O’Neil took bronze, also at 149. Rounding out the top seven were Gerry McDonald (150), Kolby Kniel and Jeremy Vold (153) and Ryan Tofani (154).
Mount Royal’s Maddie Pedersen captured individual gold on the women’s side, carding a two-day score of 176. Lauren Schmidek placed fourth at 184 and Katie Benoit eleventh at 204. Next up is the PING CCAA National Golf Championships Oct. 11-15, at The Dunes Golf Course in Kamloops, B.C.
