Quidditch at the University of Calgary
Every Sunday at the University of Calgary you’ll find enthusiastic Harry Potter fans playing the muggle (non-wizard) version of the sport Quidditch. If you are unfamiliar with Quidditch, for shame. It is the wildly popular sport from the fictional wizarding world of Harry Potter. The wizard version of the sport involves two teams of seven players riding flying broomsticks around a pitch, using four balls and six elevated ring-shaped goals.
The muggle version of the sport does not involve flying unfortunately, but it still requires the Keepers to get past the Chaser to put the ball through the goal, which in this case was a hula hoop. Beaters try to stop the chasers by tossing balls (Bludgers) at them, forcing them to drop their own (the Quaffle). There is also still a Seeker, though the Golden Snitch takes the form of a person that must be caught.
The University of Calgary has the only Quidditch team in the city and their practices are fairly laid back. Perhaps Mount Royal University should start up their own Quidditch team to give them some competition.
