The Great Gatsby
Warner Bros. Pictures
Leonardo DiCaprio and Toby Maguire
May 10th, 2013
The Great Gatsby is the tale of a midwestern boy coming to the bustling city of New York in the height of America’s roaring 20’s and his attempts to fit in to a world of money, power, love and decadence. Staring Leonardo DiCaprio playing the titular Jay Gatsby and Toby Maguire as Nick Carraway, this film promises to be a high pace and amazing though tragic adaptation of a 1925 American classic novel.
Star Trek: Into Darkness
Paramount Pictures
J.J. Abrams
May 17th, 2013
The follow-up to J.J. Abrams critically acclaimed 2009 self-titled Star Trek and 12th in a movie line that began in 1979, promises to be a highly intense and action packed sci-fi thriller. Featuring mind-blowing special effects which brings the viewer into huge cities, spaceships and combat — this is one movie where the trailer alone had me cheering. Though it does seem the art directors are taking cues from the opening of the popular video game Mass Effect 3 for buildings and guns. Will the crew of the Enterprise be able to handle this new terror which threatens to destroy earth? We can only wait and see.
Man of Steel
Warner Bros. Pictures/ DC Entertainment
Henry Cavill
June 14th, 2013
The promised reboot of the Christopher Reeves franchise, Man of Steel is a darker look at a world which doesn’t know if it is willing to have a man with as much power as Superman. Though featuring numerous changes to the Superman mythos, (no Lex Luthor) this movie is building up to be an interesting and, from what can be garnered from the trailers, emotional look at the world’s most well-known superhero. Will this be star Henry Cavill’s first major blockbuster success? I’m looking on this one with hopeful eyes.
Despicable Me 2
Universal Pictures
Steve Carell and Miranda Cosgrove
July 3rd, 2013
Gru, his three daughters and his little yellow insane minions all return not as villains, but are instead recruited in to help the Anti-Villain League stop a new evil mastermind. The sequel to a hilarious yet often deeply touching family picture promises to bring all your favourite actors back to voice their characters in this upcoming family comedy picture. I will bet it will be perfect for kids and even adults looking for a nice happy adventure with just the right number of laughs thrown in.
The Wolverine
20th Century Fox/Marvel Entertainment
Hugh Jackman
July 26th, 2013
Following the commercial disappointment of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Marvel has decided to send Wolverine/Hugh Jackman in an entirely new direction: Japan. Here Wolverine will face for the first time in his movie career an enemy whose power can truly kill Wolverine — The Silver Samurai. The Samurai will fight alongside the Yakuza in an attempt to keep Marvel’s most dangerous mutant dead and buried. The fight for his life looks to be filled with powerful action and maybe even some touching scenes between lovers. Will this revive the X-Men franchise after X-Men Origins?
