Just in time for Canada Day, the city of Calgary has announced the grand opening of the New Brighton Athletic park. Just off 130 Ave SE, the park is the first of it’s kind serving the new communities in Calgary’s south side. Government officials say parks like this are part of a continued effort to allow these new communities to grow.
“Our government is committed to moving our province forward, and ensuring municipalities have the resources they need to build stronger, more dynamic communities for Alberta families,” says Danielle Larivee, Minister of Municipal Affairs. We are proud to invest in infrastructure, such as the New Brighton Athletic Park, which provides opportunities for recreation and sports, enhances quality of life, and brings members of the community together.”
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says resources like free outdoor parks are a necessity to the city as a whole, as Calgary continues to grow in more ways than just population.
“As Calgary continues to grow and change, so do Calgarians’ needs,” says Nenshi. “Quality public sport and recreation spaces are important for fostering cultural diversity, encouraging active, healthy lifestyles, and stimulating the local economy.”
City officials and residents alike are all excited to see the continued growth of Calgary’s south east side, as the city continues to grow and push it’s borders further out.
“The progress we are seeing on major public investments in southeast Calgary is truly exciting”, says Ward 12 Councillor Shane Keating, “facilities like the New Brighton Athletic Park, Remington YMCA in Quarry Park and the new recreation facility being constructed in Seton are tremendous assets to one of the fastest growing areas in the entire province.”
The New Brighton Athletic Park is the first of it’s kind to be built in almost 28 years and features public art and a long walkway by the lake in the community. For more information about the park, visit calgary.ca/recreationprojects.
