CD Review: My Woman by Angel Olsen
“I’ll let the light shine in/ It’s not gonna kill you” are lyrics off My Woman that particularly stand out in comparison to Olsen’s last album, Burn Your Fire for No Witness. Still true to her most poetic, introspective, and often sad songs off of Burn Your Fire, Olsen has taken the chance to show listeners she can feel more than despair. With songs like “Shut Up Kiss Me” and “Never Be Mine,” Olsen breaks out of the box her previous album put her in. Upbeat folk sounds begin My Woman, descending into more slow, emotional, ballads like “Sister” and “Woman.” My Woman poignantly displays a complex range of emotions and explores the topics of romance, possession, and womanhood with ease.
