CD Review: reputation by Taylor Swift

The old Taylor Swift really is dead. Swift’s new album reputation is dark and twisty. She dabbles into using auto-tune. Some of the songs also appear to have hip-hop elements to them (as much as a 27-year-old white woman can do hip-hop). The album shows Swift has grown. Where 1989 was all about getting over heartbreak, this album is about coming into your own and (somewhat) dealing with problems (of which Swift seems to have a lot of). The album works except for where it doesn’t. Her earlier released singles seem to stick out like a sore thumb on this album. The singles showcase a whiny Swift that can’t get over herself or her problems whereas tracks like “Dress” and “New Years Day” represent her potential and depth. Through it all, Swift is absolutely unapologetic. Your move Kanye.
