Men’s Soccer Team
It’s strange to think that while school has just gotten started the men’s soccer team has been hard at work for weeks in their journey towards a Canada West title. Looking to avenge last season’s disappointing playoff defeat, the Cougars’ mens team are 6-1-1 and rest safely in second place in the conference standings. All-Star Cody Cook has continued right where he left off last season on a scorching pace. Cook leads the squad with five goals and is the league leader in shots with 33.
London Calling
Well, Manchester at least. Cody Cartier, who played three years with the Cougars, goes to a Manchester Storm team playing out of the UK’s Elite Hockey League. The forward was a point-per-game player with the Cougars, notching 32 goals to go along with 45 assists during his 74 game stint in the CIS. It’ll be a new look Cougars’ team this season losing some of their past scoring prowess (Tyler Fiddler, Male Athlete of the Year at Mount Royal in 2016, especially), but as has been the story since he took the reigns, “in Head Coach Bert Gilling we trust”.
2016/17 Court Action
Since joining the CIS, Mount Royal’s court teams have proved to be a little bit inconsistent. While both of the volleyball teams have looked very poised at times, neither of the basketball teams seem to be generating any traction. A young women’s volleyball team from a year ago will look to use added experience to their advantage and attempt to make their mark on the CIS playoff picture. Meanwhile the mens team also needs to be taken seriously, especially with third year player Tyler Schmidt coming off of an exceptional 2015-16 campaign.
