Todd’s Nods: Reality Bites
Prediction: It is the year 2050.
Picture the NBA in its 11th season since becoming a basic cable reality television show. Instead of receiving rings every year, the NBA champions now pick out rings over a two-week period at a Tiffany & Co. store in downtown New York.
Instead of earning spots on a team, players now vote to keep teammates depending on their bathroom habits in a locked house in training camp.
This is what it could come too.
The New Jersey Nets have recently had an influx of new fans attending games — largely due to people wanting to jeer at powerforward Kris Humphries. The boo-birds are up in arms over the player’s divorce from reality TV sensation Kim Kardashian.
This may be the exception to the colloquialism “any press is good press.”
Celebrity marital status’ obviously remains the business of those involved — and maybe TMZ. But, bringing it into a medium like basketball is diluting the NBA’s credibility.
This also happened with Kim Kardashian with her publicized relationship and subsequent break-up from the NFL’s Reggie Bush, which took a stab at professional football’s credibility.
A little celebrity drama is probably unavoidable.
However for the traditionalist sports fan’s sake, the reach of reality TV should not extend to a point where the Stanley Cup gets awarded to the yearly winner of CBC’s Battle of the Blades.
Now does anyone know what time Khloe & Lamar is on?
