Standing in the Liberty Lounge as a bouncer for the past three years, Dylan Clarkson has seen Students’ Association politics at its best.
“I’ve worked in the bar, and that is where real politics happen,” said Clarkson. “That’s where everyone after a couple of beers tells you what is really happening…. I have listened to those people and I have learned a lot through them.”
In his third year of studying journalism here at the college, this will be Clarkson’s first attempt to join into student politics as he runs for the position of president in the current byelection.
Clarkson said he has always wanted to try politics and feels he has good life experience for the position. Clarkson believes he has a good feeling for what is missing and he could really add a new voice to the SAMRC.
“The biggest thing I have heard people rage about is how expensive it is,” said Clarkson. “I’ve had people tell me they can’t go to the bar because they are getting killed on tuition.”
Personally, Clarkson holds three jobs himself to get him through school, as well as planning for his journalism internship.
He also believes that student council meetings are too long and more efficiency is needed in the SA, which is what he plans to bring to the table.
“If you’re afraid of offending people or being liked by everyone you are not going to get things accomplished. So I am not afraid to make a few enemies to get things done for the Students’ Association.”

My name is Dylan Clarkson and here are three reasons why you’re going to vote for me.
Cheaper tuition, working with the community to improve parking, and ending the mis-management of your money. It begins simply really, lobbying the provincial government for a one per cent increase in the provincial sales tax to help subsidize post secondary education. Working with organizations both in and around the college to help ease the parking crunch for all students and employees. Most importantly is the proper management of your money, that is to say I will ensure your money is not pissed away on projects that do not benefit you, the student.
I love my country and am proud to serve it in our Armed Forces. I hope that I can serve you and this institution as well as I do Canada. This is the finest country on earth and we are fortunate to live in one of its greatest cities and attend such a renowned institution. I want you to work with me to make Mount Royal even bigger and better in the face of an uncertain future.
I will not promise you the moon but I can promise you that I will make your vote count. By placing your trust in me you can assure yourself a strong future for Mount Royal with a man of confidence and drive at the wheel. Make the right choice, make your vote count. Vote Dylan Clarkson for Mount Royal Students' Association President.
Remember, only YOU can change your government with YOUR VOTE.
